PURPOSE: The reaction of a dioxycarbonyl ketene dimercaptide and 1,1,2-trihalogenethane in the presence of a base achieves high-purity and high-yield production of the titled compound used as a fungicide and a remedy for hepatopathy.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a compound of formula I (M is alkali metal, ammonium; R, R1 are ester-forming organic residue) with 1,1,2-trihalogenethane of formula II in the presence of a base gives the objective compound of formula III. The reaction is carried out in a polar solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide and water and the base such as sodium hydroxide is used in an amount of 1W2mol per mol of the reactant. The compound of formula I is obtained almost quantitatively by reaction between a malonic ester of formula IV and carbon disulfide in the presence of a base.
