Optimal reservoing times of an ink jet printer are determined to be when a calculated time period t-calc exceeds a fixed maximum value M, where the calculated time period is a function of the time T since last reservoing, of the usage C, and of the square of temperature changes. Specifically, the calculated time period, t-calc, iswhere T = time since last reservoing,C = usage value,K = temperature changes, andm,k = empirically-determined constants.
