PURPOSE: To obtain the magnetic recording medium which has superior corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and electromagnetic conversion characteristics by specifying the properties of an oxide crystal layer which is formed nearby from the surfase of a magnetic thin film on a nonmagnetic substrate and contains the oxide crystal phase of magnetic metal.
CONSTITUTION: A layer which is formed continuously in the film thickness direction of the oxide crystal layer and contains magnetic metal and its oxide mixedly contains metal oxide satisfying stoichiometry and magnetic metal mixedly as well and metal oxide contained in the oxide crystal layer. Then, the ratio α of oxide forming metal atoms to all metal atoms forming metal and metal oxide at each film thickness depth decreases continuously from the surface of the magnetic thin film in the film thickness direction. The depth position of the magnetic thin film in the mixed layer in the film direction where the value α is 0.5 is 50W95 preferably for practical use. The wear resistance is improved and a protecting function is reinforced because of the presence of the mixed layer to contribute to an increase in the output level of the magnetic recording medium. Further, the grain size of magnetic metal crystal grains is decreased and the C/N of the magnetic recording medium is improved greatly.
