PURPOSE: To carry out the coating of an optical fiber, uniformly at a high speed, by detecting the position of the optical fiber coated with a thermoplastic resin pipe with a position detector, and controlling the center of the pipe to coincide with the running axis of the optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: The optical fiber matrix 1 is introduced slowly into the drawing furnace 3 by the matrix feeder 2, and the drawn optical fiber is immediately passed through the thermoplastic resin pipe 6. The pipe 6 is introduced into the heater 8 by the pipe feeder 7, heated to cover the optical fiber 5, and wound with the winder 11. The position of the coated optical fiber 9 is detected by the position detector 10, and when the detected position is deviated from the preset position, the signal is fed back via the control circuit 13 to the pipe- position controlling device 12 to control the center of the pipe to coincide with the running axis of the optical fiber 5.
