NEW MATERIAL:The trans-4-(4'-substituted phenyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 4"-chlorophenyl ester of formulaI(R is 1W10 C alkyl or alkoxy).
EXAMPLE: trans-4-(4'-Pentylphenyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 4"-chlorophenyl ester.
USE: A liquid crystal displaying element. Although the positive dielectric anisotropy of the compound is smaller than that of the widely used CN-containing substance, the compound has relatively low threshold voltage and saturation voltage and wide nematic temperature range, and is stable to water, light, and heat.
PROCESS: The compound of formulaIcan be prepared by (1) reacting the trans-4- (4'-substituted phenyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid of formula II with thionyl chloride, and (2) reacting the resultant trans-4-(4'-substituted phenyl)-cyclohexanecarbonyl chloride of formula III with p-chlorophenol in pyridine.
