PURPOSE: To make size smaller and life longer by switching electronically an optical path by utilizing the nature of a nematic liquid crystal having optical anisotropy that when an electric field is impressed thereto from the outside the refractive index with linearly polarized light changes to reflect totally the incident light beam or to allow the transmission thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A near parabolic rod lens 10 is a rod lens which constitutes an erecting imaging system of 1-fold magnification. Such lens is bisected in plane inclusive of the optical axis and a nematic liquid crystal 11 having optical anisotropy is sealed between the two cut lenses so as to attain several micron thickness. A transparent electrode 12 is provided by vapor deposition, etc. on the sectional area half the area of said liquid crystal so that a voltage can be impressed to the liquid crystal 11. Optical fibers 13W16 are disposed in the position perpendicular to the cut surface of the lens 10 and are installed in the position of the distance rf from the optical axis within the plane running the optical axis in parallel with the optical axis. The optical fibers and the near parabolic rod lens are adhered by using an adhesive agent having the refractive index approximately equal to the refractive index of said fibers and lens. A light beam is made incident from the fibers 13, 14 and is emitted from the fibers 15, 16. It is also possible to make the beam incident to and to emit the same from the opposite sides.
