PURPOSE: To perform light emission and photodetection by the same part, to allow operation by the same operator, and to automate positioning with improve reliability, by detecting the amount of joint loss of rear scattering light of an optical fiber to be jointed by an optical fiber locator.
CONSTITUTION: Light pulses emitted by a light emitting element 7 according to pulses of a pulse generator 6 are incident from a coupler 8 to the optical fiber 1. The rear scattering light generated in the fiber 1 propagates backward and is received by a photodetecting element 9 from the coupler 8; and the influence of noises is eliminated by an amplifier 10, sampling circuit 11, A/D converter 12, and adder 13 to obtain an averaged photodetection signal, which is detected by a μCPU14 as the quantity of the rear scattering light from each position corresponding to the distance of the optical fiber. The quantity of rear scattering light detected by the optical locator 5 decreases abruptly at the joint part between both optical fibers 1 and 2 owing to the joint loss. A positioning mechanism 4 is driven by the output of the μCPU14 to match both fibers 1 and 2 with each other so that the insertion loss is minimum.
