PURPOSE: To extract the directional segment of a character line having various inclination with a small scanning frequency by scanning one pattern in which inclination codes are applied to all black points in a character pattern to detect the directional segments of the plural directions simultaneously.
CONSTITUTION: In a character pattern in which inclination codes are applied to all the black points, raster scanning of eight directions are successively executed after completing characteristic transmission. If N or more black points including a black point to be remarked are continued, the respective numbers of inclination codes of horizontal, vertical, left, and right inclination are counted. The counted results are compared with the prescribed plural pairs of conditions. As the result, it is decided that the character segment in the detecting direction corresponding to the pair of the satisfied conditions exists in the black point to be remarked, and information is applied to each prescribed position of a pattern memory. After completing the extraction of the black point characteristic, characteristic integration processing is executed and the identification part 500 decides an input character and outputs the decided result.
