PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate of various agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, dyes, etc. in high yield and purity, by reacting a chlorobenzonitrile compound with potassium fluoride under pressure in the absence of a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective fluorobenzonitrile compound is produced by reacting a chlorobenzonitrile compound having at least one chlorine atom at 2-, 4- or 6-position (e.g. 2,6-dichlorbenzonitrile) with potassium fluoride at 200W 450°C, preferably 300W400°C for 0.5W30hr under pressure in the absence of a solvent. The amount of the potassium fluoride is 0.8W2 times, preferably 1W1.5 times the stoichiometric amount necessary to substitute all the chlorine atoms at the 2-, 4- or 6-position of the chlorobenzonitrile compound with fluorine atoms.
