PURPOSE: To produce an extremely high-MW, easily moldable aromatic sulfide polymer, by reacting a specified amorphous vitreous compound with a dihalogen- substituted aromatic compound in the presence of a small amount of added water in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An anhydrous amorphous vitreous compound (A) is obtained by adding an acidic gas such as H2S, CO2, or HCl, or its aqueous solution to an aqueous solution to of a (hydr)oxide of a metal selected from the alkali or alkaline earth metals to bring these ions into a state in which S2-, inorganic anions other than S2-, and metal ions selected from the alkali or alkaline earth metal ions are uniformly dissolved in water; rapidly cooling this solution to form a hydrated solid in which these ions are randomly bonded by an ionic bond; and drying this hydrated solid at 120W900°C in a vacuum of below 150Torr. The anhydrous amorphous vitreous compound is reacted with a dihalogen-substituted aromatic compound (e.g., p-dichlorobenzene) at 100W250°C in the presence of 0.031W1mol, per component A corresponding, in an amount, to 1g-equivalent of S2-, of added water in an organic solvent.
