Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound having excellent refractive index anisotropy and useful as a liquid crystal compound by reacting an ethynylbenzene derivative with an aromatic halide in the presence of a metal catalyst and a basic substance.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula IV is produced by reacting (A) an ethynylbenzene derivative of formula I [A is H, fluorine, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy or group of formula II (R1 is 2-12C alkenyl or alkynyl; n is 0 or 1); X and Y are H or fluorine] with (B) an aromatic halide of formula III (R is 1-12C alkyl, 2-12C alkenyl or alkoxyalkyl; B is Br or I) in the presence of a metal catalyst and a basic substance. Preferable example of the metal catalyst is palladium chloride.
