PURPOSE: To detect breakage of a tool by quality corresponding to a user's request by detecting the breakage of the tool by processing an output signal of an AE sensor by a signal processing part, and also providing a selection input means for executing a selection of a breakage detecting condition.
CONSTITUTION: An AE sensor 6 is attached in the vicinity of a tool 2 such as a drilling machine, etc. having a numerical control device 3, etc. In this state, its output signal is processed by a signal processing part 7 containing a frequency discriminating means consisting of a variable amplification factor amplifier 21, band pass filters 22, 23, detectors 24, 25 and a comparator 27, and a differentiating circuit 26 for catching a rise signal, and a breakage of the tool 2 is detected. Also, a deciding condition input key 14 for executing a selection of a breakage detecting condition is provided so that a frequency spectrum analysis and a rise signal of the signal processing part 7 and their AND condition can be selected. Accordingly, the tool breakage can be detected by various characteristics, and the handling property can be improved.
