Abstract:

To increase the adhesion of a film and to improve wear resistance, with respect to a tool having a hard film of ceramics, by applying surface modification by means of PVD or CVD and to improve tool life.

A tool steel, which has an alloy composition consisting of 0.5-2.3% C, 0.4-4.0% Si, ≤1.0% Mn, 3.5-5.5% Cr, 0.5-6.0% V, ≤20% W, ≤15% Mo, and the balance essentially Fe and satisfying W+2Mo=5 to 28% or further containing ≤15% Co, is formed into tool and used after being subjected to surface modification.
