Abstract:

PURPOSE: To develop a tool for working org. matter which withstands long-term use by interposing a ceramic sepn. layer via a component migration layer into the surface of a base plate of a metallic appliance at the time of forming a TiN layer having high hardness and wear resistance on the surface of this appliance.

CONSTITUTION: At the time of producing the appliance for cutting and working an org. matter by using metals and more particularly steel products as a base plate 3, the steel base plate 3 is put into a vacuum chamber 19 and the oxide and deposits on the surface are cleaned away by arc heating. Next, gaseous Ar is introduced from a gas introducing port 39 into this vacuum chamber 19 and the mixture composed of Al and Ti in a crucible 30 is heated by arcs 52 to evaporate the Al. O2 is supplied into the vacuum chamber while the Al is deposited by evaporation on the surface of the base plate 3, an Al2O3 based non-ceramic layer 9 is formed via the migration layer 11 of the components changing from the A to the Al2O3. In succession, the Ti in the crucible 30 is evaporated and the atmosphere in the vacuum chamber is formed of gaseous N2 to form the hard layer 7 which consists of TiN having Vickers hardness of >1500 and has the excellent wear resistance via the component migration layer 8.
