PURPOSE: To attain optimum tracking control of rotary heads different in track width, by controlling the carrying speed of a magnetic tape so that the head having the narrowest width in plural rotary heads having different width broader than the track width is to be on-track.
CONSTITUTION: When the magnetic tape carrying speed is fed back so that crosstalk inputs from adjacent tracks with the reproduction from a narrow head HBO in plural (e.g., 2) rotary heads HAO, HBO wider than the track width performing the recording and reproduction at the same height and the same position of tracks T1, T2... are made equal and an output of a comparison circuit 14 goes to zero, then the head HBO is brought to on-track. Further, the reproduced output processed at the comparator 14 with the head HAO is compared with a reference voltage 21 at a comparator 15 and attains to a magnetic tape speed controlling feedback signal similarly. Through the constitution that the on-track with the narrow head for less possibility of off-track is used as refference, the optimum tracking control of the rotary head having different width is attained.
