PURPOSE: To detect a tracking error accurately by recording a one cycle pilot signal during H blanking and detecting the pilot signal in time series during reproduction, and thus obtaining the tracking error.
CONSTITUTION: Pilot signals are recorded during H blanking by pilot signal recording circuits 7, 8, and 9 so that they are separated by ≥2 tracks. Reproduced pilot signals are detected by a pilot signal detecting circuit 16, and a discriminating circuit 17 discriminates between a pilot signal recorded on a leading track and that recorded on a lagging track. The level of the signal reproduced from the leading track is held by the 1st holding circuit 18, and that from the lagging track is held by the 2nd holding circuit 19. The outputs of those holding circuits are inputted to a differential amplifier 20 to find their difference, which is outputted as a tracking error.
