The number of fork 12A, 12 to be projected is controlled in response to load width of a load 6 on the basis of a reference fork 12A as a reference, and position of the load 6 to be housed in shelves 2 of a rack 3 is controlled on the basis of the position of an insertion groove 26 based on the reference groove 26A and the number of groove to be occupied. With this structure, control is remarkably simplified, and efficient carry-in/out work having high reliability is enabled by combination with a transferring device having the simple structure hard to generate a failure and capable of being simply and efficiently operated. Automatic warehouse improved in the load 6 housing efficiency is realized by realizing the carrying of the load 6 into/from shelves 2 capable of housing the loads 6 having various load width in the crane traveling direction A.
