To provide a homogeneous alignment type homogeneous ECB mode transflective liquid crystal display device which has simple construction, enables the cost thereof to be reduced by decreasing the number of components and has significantly improved viewing angle characteristics while optically striking a balance between a transmissive region and a reflective region.
The transflective liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal cell interposed between a pair of substrates, wherein a first retardation layer formed of at least a layer of a composition containing a discotic liquid crystalline compound is disposed between the polarizing plate and the liquid crystal cell, and wherein an optic axis of the first retardation layer is oriented nearly parallel to the substrate surface of the liquid crystal cell.
