To provide a traveling magnetic field generator capable of increasing travel speed of a traveling magnetic field compared to conventional ones.
A traveling magnetic field generator has a magnet array 5 made up of a plurality of magnets 3 arranged at a first pitch so that N poles and S poles are alternately arranged in an array. The traveling magnetic field generator includes first and second pole piece arrays 7 and 9 which are spaced from the magnet array 5, interpose the magnetic array 5 therebetween, extend along the magnetic array 5, and are arranged with a predetermined phase difference from each other. The first pole piece array 7 is constructed by arranging a plurality of first pole pieces 8 having a length opposed to at least two adjacent magnets of the magnet array 5 so as to create an array at a second pitch. The second pole piece array 9 is also constructed similarly to the first pole piece array 7. One of the first and second pole piece arrays 7 and 9 and the magnet array 5 is moved with respect to the other at a predetermined relative velocity.
