PURPOSE: To obtain a safe treating agent for mental disease such as depression containing a pterin derivative as a main ingredient and participated by intracerebral tetrahydrobiopterin.
CONSTITUTION: The objective treating agent containing a pterin derivative expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are H or R1 and R2 form a single bond together; When R1 and R2 are H, R3 is CH3, L-erythro-CH(OH)CH(OH)CH3, etc.; when R1 and R3 form a single bond, R3 is COCH(OH)CH3] as a main ingredient. The compound expressed by formula I includes L-erythro-5,6,7,8- tetrahydrobiopterin expressed by formula II, L-cepiapterin expressed by formula III, 1',2'-diacethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin expressed by formula IV. The objective treating agent containing the compound expressed by formula I as a main ingredient is useful for each symptom observed in depression, e.g. lack of inhibition, apathy, spontaneity.
