To enable the treatment of exhaust gas even in the case of abrupt emission of the gas by supplying a liquid containing a nutrient elements existing in the treating object substance to a microorganism during the period free from the supply of the treating object substance in the exhaust gas to the microorganism.
This exhaust gas treating method comprises the decomposition of a treating object substance (e.g. sulfur-based odorous substance) in an exhaust gas with a microorganism (e.g. bacteria of the genus Bacillus). The activity of the microorganism is constantly maintained to enable the treatment of the exhaust gas even in the case of abrupt increase of the concentration of the treating object substance by supplying a feed liquid added with a substitution substance (e.g. sodium thiosulfate) containing an element same as the nutrient element in the treating object substance during the period free from the supply of the treating object substance to the microorganism or supplied with only a small amount of the object substance. The liquid is supplied from a substitution substance tank 3 with a pump 3a through a water- storage tank 2 and transferred with a pump 2a to a packed colunm 1 having a carrier layer 1a packed with granular ceramic carrier, etc., holding microorganisms.
