PURPOSE: To reduce selectively the content of an aromatic primary hydroperoxide, by reacting a hydroperoxide mixture containing the aromatic primary hydroperoxide and an aromatic tertiary hydroperoxide under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroperoxide mixture containing an aromatic primary hydroperoxide shown by the formula ArCH2OOH (Ar is substituted or unsubstituted aromatic) group and an aromatic tertiary hydroperoxide shown by the formula Ar'-C(CH3)2OOH (Ar' is as shown for Ar) is hydrogenated in the presence of a novel catalyst (e.g., palladium, platinum, rhodium, etc.) at ≤50°C, preferably at 10W35°C. In the reaction, the reaction is finished at a stage where the reaction ratio of the primary hydroperoxide is ≥60%, and the reaction ratio of the tertiary hydroperoxide is ≤20%, to give the desired substance.
USE: Useful as a raw material for phenols, peroxide, aromatic alcohol, etc.
