Abstract:

Tricyclic aromatic compound (I), is new. Tricyclic aromatic compound of formula (I), is new. A 1, A 2, A 3, A 41,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene or 1,4-cyclohexadienylene (all optionally substituted by four F), CH 2 (substituted by O or S) (where O and S are not directly bonded together), 1,4-phenylene (substituted by 1-2 F or Cl and 1-2 CH-groups by N), 4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene or 2,6-spiro(3,3)heptylene; Q 1-Q 2O-CH 2, O-CF 2 (both preferred), CH 2-O, CF 2-O, CH 2-CH 2, O-CO or CO-O; R 1, R 21-12C-alkyl (optionally substituted by halo, where non-adjacent CH 2 groups are substituted by O, S or CO and two adjacent CH 2 groups by CH=CH, CF=CF, COO, OOC, C=C or 1,2-cyclopropanylene, or three adjacent CH 2-groups by 1,3-cyclobutanylene), F, Cl, OCF 3, OCHF 2, CN, NCS or H; X 1, X 2, X 3H, F or Cl; Z 1, Z 2, Z 3, Z 4CH 2CH 2, CH 2O, OCH 2, CH 2CF 2, CF 2CH 2, CF 2O, OCF 2, COO, OOC, CH=CH, CF=CF or C?=C; and q, r, s, t, u : 0-1. Provided that R 1 and R 2 are not simultaneously H. Independent claims are included for: (1) a liquid crystalline medium comprising at least two compounds of (I) as components; and (2) an electro-optical display element comprising the liquid crystalline medium.
