Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound, useful as a composition component for a nematic liquid crystal display element or a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element and excellent in chemical stability.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [R1 is a 1-14C alkyl or alkoxyalkyl; R1 is a 1-14C alkyl; A is formula II, etc., (L1 and L2 are each H or F); Y is a single bond, 0, etc.; Z is a single bond or 0; X is H, F, etc.], e.g. 3-trifluoromethyl-3'-fluoro-4,4"-dioctyloxyterphenyl. The compound of formula I is obtained by lithiating a compound of formula III with C4H4Li, then reacting the resultant compound with B(OCH3)3, treating the prepared boric acid ester derivative with aqueous hydrogen peroxide, thereby providing a compound of formula IV and then etherifying or esterifying the compound of formula IV. Since the obtained compound has an especially great negative Δε, the composition is useful as a host material in a τ-Vmin mode method or a liquid crystal material such as a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition according to a high-frequency superposition method or an electrically controlled birefringence mode (ECB) type nematic liquid crystal composition.
