PURPOSE: To obtain a trisubstd. biphenyl useful as an active compd. in drugs, in particular an antihypertensive drug and an antiatherosclerotic drug.
CONSTITUTION: The trisubstd. biphenyl represented by formula I (where R1 is carboxyl or a 1-8C alkoxycarbonyl; R2 is a 1-8C alkyl; R3 is a halogen, OH, CN, a 1-6C alkoxy, a 1-8C alkyl, CF3, OCF3, carboxamide, carboxyl, a 1-8C alkoxycarbonyl or NO2; and R4 is carboxyl or tetrazolyl) and its salts, e.g. 6-butyl-4-methoxycarbonyl-2-oxo-1-[(3-fluoro-2'-tetrazol-5-yl-biphenyl-4-yl)- methyl]-1,2-dihydropyridine is obtd. by reacting a pyridone of formula II with a compd. of formula III (where R'4 is a 1-6C alkoxycarbonyl or a group of formula IV; and E is Cl or Br) in an inert solvent in the presence of a base by adding a catalyst if appropriate.
