PURPOSE: To obtain the titled printer which requires no large motive power and set area with a quick type selection operation by enabling the performing of character selection and printing operations with a type panel left secured.

CONSTITUTION: A mechanism is provided to house and hold types 11A into a type carrier 27 moving over a fixed type plane 11. An X1 track 12, an X2 track 15 and a Y track 19 are arranged to move the carrier 27 and the carrier 27 is moved right above the position of a type to be selected prior to the start of printing. Then, after a type is housed and held in the carrier, the type carrier is moved to the type receiving position right below a type bar. After the end of the printing operation, this is returned to the original position in the type panel.
