Abstract:
To provide a surgical suture material with a small diameter and a surgical suture coating material.SOLUTION: A small diameter surgical suture material and a surgical suture coating material prepared by twisting biocompatible polymer fibers or a braid have been developed, which support drug delivery and maintain high tensile strength. The fiber may incorporate (for example, encapsulate) one or more therapeutic agents, prophylactic or diagnostic agents, and provide long-term release over a period of at least one week, preferably one month. While a monofilament fiber loses tensile strength due to the inclusion of the active agent, the twisting of the drug loaded multifilament fiber allows increased tensile strength for the entire composite material while retaining the small diameter. A method of making these materials and using them for ophthalmic surgery and vasculature repair was also developed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
