In the ultraviolet irradiation apparatus 1 structured by mounting a box type ultraviolet irradiation unit on the upper surface of an irradiation chamber in which a material to be treated is housed and irradiated with ultraviolet light from the upper surface, the ultraviolet irradiation unit 2 is provided with an outer case 11 having an opened one side surface to become at least a taking in and out port, an inner case 12 housing a long and slender ultraviolet lamp 111, sliding means 13, 15 for sliding the inner case to draw out from and push into the outer case in the taking in and out port and rotary support means 14, 16 for rotatably supporting the rear end part of the inner case in such a state that the whole length of the inner case is drawn out from the outer case.
