Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a propellant gas which comprises a specific fluorinated hydrocarbon, does not destroy the ozone layer, is noncombustible, and is useful for medical apparatus, heat pump systems, etc.
CONSTITUTION: This propellant gas comprises a compd. of formula I [wherein Rf is CF3 or one Rf combines with the other Rf to form -CF2-CF2-, -CF2-CF2-CF2- or -CH(CF3)-CH(CF3)-] (e.g. 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobutane). This compd. is prepd. by the catalytic hydrogenation of a compd. of formula II (wherein X is H, F, Cl or Br; and Y is F, Cl or Br) (e.g. 1,1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-chloro-2-butene) in the presence of a suitable base (e.g. potassium hydroxide). A compd. of formula III [wherein one Rf' combines with the other Rf' to form -CF2-CF2-CF2-or -CH(CF3)-CH(CF3)-] (e.g. 1,1,2,2,3,3-hexafluorocyclopentane) is novel.
