To protect human epidermis or human hair against sunrays by using a specific cholesteric liquid crystal composition as a filter in a UV-A and a UV-B regions of a cosmetic and a medicine.
A cholesteric liquid crystal composition is obtained by including (A) a polymerizable chiral liquid crystal monomer capable of providing a cholesteric liquid crystal phase having <450 nm pitch and represented by the formula [Z1-Y1-(A1)m-Y2-M1-Y3-]n-X [A1 is a spacer having 1-30C chain length; Y1 to Y3 are each a chemical bond, O, S or the like; M1 is a mesogen; Z1 is H or the like; X is an n-valent chiral group; (m) is 0 or 1; (n) is 1-6] or (B) a mixture of (i) an achiral liquid crystal monomer represented by the formula Z2-Y4-(A2)o-Y5-M2-Y6-(A3)p-Y7-Z3 [A2 and A3 are each a spacer having 1-30C chain length; M2 is a mesogen; Y4 to Y7 are each a chemical bond, O, S or the like; (o) and (p) are each 0 or 1; Z2 and Z3 are each H or the like] with (ii) a chiral additive capable of affording a cholesteric liquid crystal phase having <450 nm pitch.
