Fluorinated oxa-anthracene compounds are new. Fluorinated oxa-anthracene compounds (I) of formula (1) are new. [Image] X 1>H or F; G 1>-G 2>-CH 2CH 2or -CH=C-; R 1>, R 2>H, M 2>-A 2>-R 5>, 1-16C alkyl or 2-16C alkenyl optionally having non-neighboring CH 2groups replaced by -O-, -C(=O)O-, -O-C(=O)-O-, -C(=O)- or -Si(CH 3) 2- and/or one CH 2group optionally replaced by -CC-, cyclopropan-1,2-diyl, cyclobutan-1,3-diyl, cyclohexan-1,4-diyl or phorylen-1,4-diyl and/or at least one H atom optionally replaced by F and/or Cl; R 3>H, M 2>-A 2>-R 5>, 1-16C alkyl or alkoxy or 2-16C alkenyl or alkenyloxy optionally having non-neighboring CH 2groups replaced by -O-, -C(=O)O-, -O-C(=O)-O-, -C(=O)- or -Si(CH 3) 2- and/or one CH 2group optionally replaced by -CC-, cyclopropan-1,2-diyl, cyclobutan-1,3-diyl, cyclohexan-1,4-diyl or phorylen-1,4-diyl and/or at least one H atom optionally replaced by F and/or Cl; R 4>H, F, Cl, CN, -NCS, CF 3, CH 2F, OCF 3, OCHF 2, OCH 2CF 3, OCH=CF 2, M 2>-A 2>-R 5>, 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy or 2-12C alkenyl or alkenyloxy optionally having non-neighboring CH 2groups replaced by -O-, -C(=O)O-, -O-C(=O)-O-, -C(=O)- or -Si(CH 3) 2- and/or one CH 2group optionally replaced by -CC-, cyclopropan-1,2-diyl, cyclobutan-1,3-diyl, cyclohexan-1,4-diyl or phorylen-1,4-diyl and/or at least one H atom optionally replaced by F and/or Cl or alkoxy, M 2>-CO-O-, -CH 2-O-, -CF 2-O-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF-, -CC-, -CH 2-CH 2-CO-O-, -CH 2CH 2-, -CF 2CF 2, -(CH 2) 4-, -OC(=O)CF=CF or a single bond; A 2>1,4-phenylene optionally having 1 or 2 H-atoms replaced by F, Cl, CN and/or OCF 3or up to 3 H-atoms replaced by CH 3and/or F, 1-cyclohexen-1,4-diyl optionally having one H-atom replaced by CH 3or F or 1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl; R 5>R 3>excluding -M 2>-A 2>-R 5>with the provisos that when R 2>is not H, R 1>and R 3>are H, when R 2>is H, R 4>is not M 2>-A 2>-R 5>, alkyl, alkoxy or alkenyl, R 1>, R 2>, R 3>and R 4>are not H simultaneously Independent claims are included for: (1) a liquid crystal mixture (II) containing at least one compound (I) and; (2) a liquid crystal display containing a mixture (II).
