PURPOSE: To improve the stability to UV by incorporating a polymerizable acrylic monomer or oligomer and a specified ultraviolet absorbing agent.
CONSTITUTION: The ultraviolet resistant coating composition is obtained by mixing 70-99 wt.% of a polymerizable acrylic monomer or oligomer of formula I [wherein p is 2-4; R4 is a (non)substituted p-valent aliphatic hydrocarbon group which can have at least one ether linkage, 30-1 wt.% of an ultraviolet absorbing agent of formula II [wherein R1 is H, halogen, 1-6C lower alkyl, a 1-6C lower alkoxy; R2 is H, halogen, 1-6C lower alkyl, or aryl sulfonyl (6-10C aryl); n is 1-3; m is 2, 3; R3 is a 2-22C divalent or trivalent hydrocarbon group, lower alkylether], and 0-10 wt.% of a photo-initiator such as benzophenone. Next, the composition is applied on the surface of an article of polycarbonate and cured by being irradiated with UV 1,800-4,000 in wavelength in an inert atmosphere.
