Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To incorporate within a tire an air maintenance feature which self-maintains tire air pressure in order to compensate for reduction in the tire pressure without a need for driver intervention.SOLUTION: An air maintenance tire assembly comprises: a tire having a valve stem 80 projecting outward from a tire cavity and operative to admit pressurized air into the cavity through a valve stem internal air passageway; air pumping means for generating pressurized air; a shaft 102 reciprocally moveable axially within the valve stem internal air passageway between a passageway-opening position and a passageway-closing position; and a pressure regulator 82 operative to move the shaft 102 axially between the passageway-opening and passageway-closing positions responsive to a detected air pressure level within the tire cavity.
