Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable free modification of open/close timing by controlling open- valve timing through variation of rotary phases of crankshaft and cam shaft while controlling close-valve timing through releasing of pressing force of a cam in opening direction of valve in the way of open-valve operation. CONSTITUTION:A pulley 14 is rotated through a timing belt 13 interlocked with a crankshaft, then the rotation is transmitted through a phase control means 10 to a cam shaft 8 so as to open/close an intake valve 5 through a lifter 66 engagable with a cam 9 on the cam shaft 8. Open-valve timing of the intake valve 5 is controlled by varying the rotary phases of the pulley 14 and the cam shaft 8. A lift control means 11 is arranged between the lifter 66 and the intake valve 5, and the control means 11 comprises a hydraulic drive mechanism and a hydraulic release valve 62 which blocks pressing force of the hydraulic drive mechanism 61 for pressing the intake valve 5 downward in the way of open-valve operation. Close valve timing of the intake valve 5 is controlled by selecting close-valve timing of the hydraulic release valve 62.
