To improve response of changing over an armature of an electromagnetic actuator mechanism between a non-attraction position and an attraction position while avoiding increase of weight and enlargement of dimension of an intake valve close timing retarding device.
Since a stopper lever 89 fixing the armature 68 of the electromagnetic actuator mechanism 62 at the non-attraction position and retaining a retention lever 67 at the non-attraction position by engaging the armature 68 with an armature fixing mechanism 64 separating the retention rod 67 from a stem end 21a of an intake valve 21, and a lock release rod 79 rocking the stopper lever 89 to release engagement of the armature 68 are provided, engagement of the stopper lever 89 and the armature 68 can be released by slightly stroking the lock release rod 79, response of changing over the armature 68 between the non-attraction position and the attraction position can be improved while avoiding increase of weight and enlargement of dimension.
