To produce a vane high in abrasion resistance of a rotary vane pump from a thermoplastic matrix material.
A billet 55 made of a thermoplastic matrix material containing chopped fibers is set at a right angle to the radial dimension of a vane to be formed to be arranged in dies 63, 65 so as to extend over the whole of the axial dimension of the vane. The billet 55 is heated to its softening temp. within the dies 63, 65 and compressed to be deformed into the shape formed by the inner surfaces of the dies 63, 65. The thermoplastic matrix material is turned so as to arrange the greater part of fibers 53 in the direction almost parallel to the radial dimension of the vane and cooled to temp. lower than its softening temp. and the formed vane is taken out of the dies 63, 65.
