To avoid adverse effects on engine performance by correcting phase difference between both actuation angles in valve lift control by both first variable mechanisms of a right and a left banks of a V-type internal combustion engine.
In a step S1, current engine operation information signals are read from various sensors. In a step S2, an actual rotation position (valve lift quantity) of a control shaft detected is read. In a step S3, if the actual rotation position of the control shaft is a target control position or not is determined. When it is determined that it is not the target control position, a step S5 is started. In the step S5, deflection quantity between the actual rotation position detected and the target control position is determined by computation, and a step S4 is started. In the step S4, the control shaft is rotation-controlled to the target position by the first variable mechanism. In a step S6, a control range (advance quantity) for the control position of the second variable mechanism is computed in which no interference occurs between an intake valve and a piston, and the intake valve and an exhaust valve. In a step S7, continuous variable control is conducted to the second variable mechanism in the above control range.
