PURPOSE: To provide a vehicle kind discriminating device for easily discriminating a vehicle kind with improved discrimination accuracy by collating a vehicle measure calculated from the picture data of the background screen of a grid-shaped pattern with various dimensional values set beforehand and deciding the vehicle kind.
CONSTITUTION: A vehicle advancing screen B is subtracted from the background screen A. In the vehicle advancing screen B, when a vehicle is positioned overlapping on the grid-shaped pattern 6, the large part of longitudinal lines 62 and lateral lines 61 is hidden and a less number of the lines are exposed. Thus, when an absolute value difference is present and also an area hidden by the vehicle 7 is equal to or more than a certain value, the presence of the vehicle is judged. When the presence of the vehicle is judged, the measure of the vehicle can be calculated from the number of the longitudinal lines 62 and the lateral lines 61 other than the hidden longitudinal lines 62 and lateral lines 61. Then, the various original values stored beforehand and the calculated vehicle measure are collated and the pertinent vehicle kind is decided. The vehicle kind can be easily and highly accurately discriminated. Also, in the case of subdividing the vehicle kind, it is enabled to be dealt with by the change of softwares without the need of newly installing a sensor or the like.
