PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely prevent proximate deployment of airbags by use of a vehicle travel safety device that performs automatic braking in order to avoid contact of the vehicle with an object.
SOLUTION: If there is the possibility that a vehicle may come in contact with an object and automatic braking is performed to avoid their contact, an automatic braking means M2 decreases the deceleration of the automatic braking when a seatbelt wearing condition sensor S3 detects that occupants are not wearing seatbelts and an airbag deployment possibility estimation means M3 estimates that there is the possibility that airbags may be deployed, so as to prevent proximate deployment that occurs as the occupants are displaced forward by inertia resulting from braking. The airbag deployment possibility estimation means M3 estimates that there is the possibility that the airbags may be deployed when the speed of the vehicle is high at the start of the automatic braking; when the relative speeds of the vehicle and the object are great at the start of the automatic braking; when the time which the vehicle takes to make contact with the object is short; and when the speed of contact at which the vehicle makes contact with the object is great.
