To provide a vertical resonator type surface emitting laser that can emit laser light which is further narrowed in irradiating angle.
The vertical resonator type surface emitting laser 100 contains a substrate 101, a pair of mirrors 102 and 104 provided above the substrate 101, and an active layer 103 provided between the mirrors 102 and 104. The laser 100 also contains refractive-index matching layers 120 and 122 formed adjacently to the active layer 103. The refractive-index matching layers 120 and 122 have refractive-index changing areas at least in their portions. The refractive-index changing areas have refractive indexes between the refractive indexes of the active layer 103 and mirrors 102 and 104, and the refractive indexes change toward the mirrors 102 and 104 from the active layer 103 so that differences between the refractive indexes and those of the mirrors 102 and 104 may decrease.
