Abstract:

To decrease the bandwidth of signals, in coding video images.

A predictive video coder performs gradient prediction, based on previous blocks (A, B and C) of image data. For a new block (X) of the image data, prediction determines the horizontal gradient and the vertical gradient, from a single block (B) located diagonally above the new block. Based on these gradients, the encoder predicts image information, based on the image processing of either an adjacent block in a horizontal direction, a vertically adjacent block or an adjacent block in the vertical direction, with respect to the new block.
