PURPOSE: To provide the video tape having excellent scratching resistance and dubbing resistance by specifying the standard deviation of the projection height distributions and number of projections of the nonmagnetic surface of the tape to specific ranges to eliminate the coarse projections.
CONSTITUTION: The video tape has the magnetic recording layer on one surface of a base film which is a nonmagnetic base material. The standard deviation σnm of the height distribution of the surface projections and the number N pieces/mm2 in excess of 225nm height on the nonmagnetic surface satisfy 2×105≤(3σ-225)N≤106. An oxide coated magnetic layer having ≥200 Oe to <400 Oe coercive force is formed on the other surface. The video tape which substantially prevents flawing of the nonmagnetic surface of the tape (scratching resistance) in a high speed stage and lessens the degradation in image quality at the time of dubbing (dubbing resistance) is obtd. in this way.
