Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vinyl alcohol polymer which is soluble even when an alkali such as sodium hydroxide or an acid is not added in preparing an aqueous solution and simultaneously satisfies the water resistance of a film obtained from an aqueous solution, the water resistance of a film containing an inorganic substance, and the power of binding an inorganic substance.
SOLUTION: The vinyl alcohol polymer is obtained by saponifying a vinyl ester polymer having specified silyl-containing monomer units and satisfies the relationships: (I) 20<P×S<370, (II) 200<P<2740Y2-3880Y+3240, and (III) 0.9<Y<1.4 (wherein P is the viscosity-average degree of polymerization of the vinyl alcohol polymer; S is the content of the silyl-containing monomer units; and Y is the bound 1,2-glycol amount (mol%) of the vinyl alcohol polymer).
