PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viscosity index improver excellent in shear stability of a lubricant composition, low in HTHS viscosity and high in viscosity index.SOLUTION: There is provided a viscosity index improver containing a (co)polymer (A) of a monomer (a) represented by the formula (1) as an essential component monomer and having a ratio of weight average molecular weight (Mw) and number average molecular weight (Mn) of the (co)polymer (A), Mw/Mn of 1.6 or less and Mn of 1,000 or more.
