Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A viscosity-reducing liquid crystal ether compound of formula I [R1, R2 are 1-7C linear chain alkyl; (n) is 3-5; group of formula II is trans (equatorial-equatorial) configurational cyclohexane ring].

USE: Useful as an electrooptical display material. The mixture of the compound of formula I with a matrix liquid crystal now generally used as a nematic liquid crystal composition permits to raise the nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature of the matrix liquid crystal and to effectively lower the viscosity thereof. The compound of formula I has excellent compatibility also with other nematic liquid crystal compositions and is utilized as a material for liquid crystal display cells capable of being driven is a with temperature range and requiring high speed responsibity and used for motor vehicles, televisions, work processors, etc.

PREPARATION: A compound of formula II is subjected to a reaction with a ylide compound prepared by treating compound of formula III with a strong base in tert.-butyl methyl ether, and the prepared compound of formula IV is catalytically reduced to provide the compound of formula I.
