PURPOSE: To obtain a visual display device which enables an observer to observe a flat image without a relay optical system.
CONSTITUTION: This visual display device has an LCD 1 and an eyepiece optical system which is disposed on the optical axis of this LCD l in order to form an exit pupil for introducing the video thereof to the inside of the observer's eyeballs and is arranged to face the LCD 1. This eyepiece optical system has a concave half mirror 2 of which the concave face is directed to the exit pupil side and a cholesteric liquid crystal 3 which is disposed on the exit pupil side of the concave half mirror. A fiber plate 5 is arranged as a correction optical element for correcting aberrations near the display screen of the LCD 1. As a result, the curvature of field of the eyepiece optical system is corrected. Apparent curving of the object plane is possible and the observation of the flat image in magnification is possible without the relay optical system. The compact device is obtd. without increasing the size of the optical system to be built therein even with a face mounting type display. The projecting length and size of the part in front of the eyes are small.
