To provide a volatile colorant which enables recording to be carried out well when used in thermal recording of a colorant evaporation type and a process for producing the same.
This volatile colorant is characterized in that (i) the total content of titanium, chromium, iron, nickel, copper, and zinc, which are transition metals of the fourth period, is set at 16 ppm or lower, or (ii) the total content of alkali and alkaline earth metals including sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and barium is set at 32 ppm or lower, or (iii) the total content of chromium, iron, nickel, copper, and zinc among transition metals of the fourth period is set at 10 ppm or lower; and that the total content of sodium, potassium, and calcium among alkali and alkaline earth metals is set at 10 ppm or lower.
