To provide a washing machine having a filter device, which is capable of selectively removing foreign matter from wash water used for washing, discharging the wash water to different channels according to the removal levels of the foreign matter and having improved operability.

A filter member 68 of the filter device 14 is divided into a circulation filter section 71 formed with filtration holes 73 and a discharge filter section 72 formed with large filtration holes 74. When water flowing from an inlet 56 to the inside of a filter casing 55 is reused, the circulation filter section 71 filtrates foreign matters by the filtration holes 73 and the water with relatively few foreign matter is guided to a tank 4 via a circulation outlet 58 and a branch pipe 15. On the other hand, when the water flowing in the filter casing 55 is discharged outside the machine, the discharge filter section 72 filtrates the foreign matter through the large filtration holes 74 and the water whose foreign matters are filtrated is discharged outside the machine via a discharge outlet 57 and a discharge pipe 11.
