To provide a method of effectively utilizing waste such as waste plastics, waste oil, carbon-containing sludge and waste solutions at the time when, e.g., metal oxide-containing dust or sludge is subjected to reduction or smelting reduction by a rotary kiln.
At the time when the main fuel and a reducing material are fed to a rotary kiln 4, and dust and/or sludge comprising the metal oxide of iron, zinc, lead, cadmium or the like is subjected to reduction or smelting reduction, waste plastics are charged mixedly with the dust and/or sludge. Carbon-containing sludge and/or waste oil can be charged instead of the plastics, or can be charged simultaneously with the plastics. It is also possible that the metal oxide of zinc, lead, cadmium or the like is converted into chloride by utilizing chlorine included in the plastics or the like so as to be evaporated away.
