PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for processing waste, allowing prescribed space and strength to be secured for a crane or the like, with reduction in the underground space of a pit for efficient three-dimensional space utilization, achieving reduction in the distance of transportation or transfer for individual processing operations.SOLUTION: An apparatus for processing waste includes: a platform 1 for receiving a waste W; a pit 2 in which the waste W is stored, agitated, and mixed; transfer means 3 for transferring the waste W; a hopper 4 into which the waste W is injected; an incinerator 5 in which the waste W is incinerated, a gas cooling part 6 at which the exhaust heat of the flue gas is heat-exchanged; an exhaust gas processing part 7 for purifying the flue gas; and an ash storage site 8 at which a solid constituent S such as ash is collected. The hopper 4, the incinerator 5, the gas cooling part 6, the exhaust gas processing part 7, and the ash storage site 8 are integrally disposed as an incineration facility 20. The incineration facility 20 is disposed adjacent to the platform 1, and the incineration facility 20 and the platform 1 are disposed adjacent to the pit 2.
